Nervousness, uncertainty and fear. This is what each of us feels when we see a new wave of infections from the Covid-19 Virus on the news every day. Obviously, the most worrying thing is the health of all of us, but… what about the managers of companies? How should they move their pieces so that this inevitable pandemic does not end their business? In this post, I will try to give you a series of tips to try to remedy a possible situation of closure of establishments, such as, for example, hiring a direct debit service that allows you to know what correspondence and calls you receive while your office must remain closed.
Coronavirus Currently, the most searched term in each and every one of the available search engines. Whether you are one of those who think that all this is being exaggerated stratospherically, or if you wholeheartedly believe that an inevitable and fearsome global pandemic is approaching. Or if you are one of mine, who finds yourself in the middle of the dilemma, not completely alarmed but beginning to feel a certain alert every time you cross the street with a pedestrian wearing a mask. What is terribly certain is that this phenomenon is affecting, and greatly, the world economy.
Starting with the hospitality industry. Hundreds of thousands of empty restaurants (mainly on the Asian continent). As a result of the panic, tourism is suffering. Flights denied, cruises stalled, trips cancelled, hotel rooms empty and hospital rooms full. Fear of going to places that gather large numbers of people, fear of going to cinemas, theatres and concerts. Important fairs and important congresses cancelled. When I mentioned at home that this year I would like to go to the Women's Day demonstration, the only thing my mother asked me was to please wear a mask.
Stay calm. Nothing that happens is in your hands.
Like every morning, I get up and make myself a strong coffee that I sip while listening to the news in the background. There is not a day when the first news item I hear has the term “coronavirus” embedded in the headline (apart from a new woman murdered by gender-based violence, a phenomenon that, let us keep in mind, kills much more than any fashionable virulence). It is always important to remain calm in the face of these situations that sow uncertainty in our thoughts, but it is almost inevitable not to have much respect for this pandemic. Because as much as we try to think that it is a simple virus, when every single day you wake up reading a new news item about an infection, you hear conversations about the subject in every group of people you meet on the street, and you sit next to dozens of people on the subway wearing gloves and masks, well, honestly, you feel a little bit of respect.
But how is the coronavirus affecting the business sector?
The other day, reading The New York Times, I came across the following news: The famous multinational oil company Chevron has ordered its 300 employees at its London headquarters to work from home after discovering that one of their employees was showing various symptoms of contracting the flu (this person had just returned from a trip to Italy). Well, to the list of empty restaurants, hotels and planes, let's add empty offices. I don't know if we are really aware of the enormous impact that this phenomenon is having on companies. If this continues, and I have no doubt that it will, what will happen to the workforce? Will we all have to work hidden in our homes while the doors of the offices are closed until further notice? And what happens if your job is not compatible with this? What if all your essential material to carry out your work must remain in the office? And what happens with calls, postal mail, parcel delivery? I really hope that things don't get any worse because this situation is extremely overwhelming for me.
